A great victory for the FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI team came in one of the most difficult stage in the 12th Santos Tour Down Under, the first stop of the 2010 UCI ProTour. Portuguese road elite champion, Manuel Cardoso, took an amazing win in the uphill sprint in Stirling, the finishing place for a rolling, 132.5-km stage starting in Unley with a final circuit whose main ascent was topped three times by the peloton. The squad led by Stefano Zanini, always well placed and captained by final lead-out man David Vitoria, made possible to contain the strong pace by the Caisse d’Epargne squad, featuring Vuelta a España winner Alejandro Valverde, and allowed Cardoso to comfortably win and even take a 1-second gap over Valverde and World road champion, local star Cadel Evans (BMC). This victory marks the second success for the youthful ProTour team, after the one earned by Rafa Valls in the Queen stage of the Tour de San Luis on Tuesday, and will surely ease up things for the Gold generation before the fourth day of competition, with 149.5 kilometres from Norwood to Goolwa.
